Poets at the library
The Vashon Library will host two poets, Elizabeth Austen and J.W. Marshall, in an evening titled “How the End Begins: Two Poets on Power, Sexuality and Mortality” at 7 p.m. tonight, June 11.
Kids play music
Ken Larson’s fifth-grade Chautauqua students will perform music on instruments they have made from found objects and reused materials at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at the Vashon Bookshop.

Chautauqua Elementary School is celebrating Literacy Week from June 9 to 13 and will host a Literacy Celebration from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 13. Literacy activities will be offered as will performances, workshops and exhibits.

The Happy Garden in Dockton will have a plant sale from 5 a.m. (for early birds) to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at 23015 Dockton Rd.
Olympic berries, logan berries, delphiniums and 52 colors of dahlia plants and tubers will all be for sale.
Some of the proceeds from the event will go to the Vashon Maury Community Food Bank.

The master gardener clinic will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 14, outside of True Value.
Master gardeners of Vashon will be available to help answer gardening questions, including which native plants will grow best in various garden conditions.
Stop by for gardening advice, plant disease identification, available resource materials and more.
The Vashon Farmers Market will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 14, in the Village Green. The market welcomes many of the Island’s young violinists, students of Gaye Detzer, who will play classical pieces between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The monthly (second Saturday) Food for Thought Farmers Market Library will be on-site. Visitors can check out DVDs and current books relating to local food issues.
Farmers will sell Island-grown or produced spinach, salad mix, bok choi, kale, fresh cut herbs, milk, eggs, meats, wine, cut flowers, annual plant starts such as tomatoes and basil, trees, perennials, native plants and more. Sol Source will sell lunch foods.

Watkins signs books
Island author Marj Watkins will sign “Royal Spy,” the sequel to “Rotaida,” at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at Vashon Bookshop. The book is an historical adventure set during Charlemagne’s reign.

Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) hosts an adopt-a-cat day every Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Pandora’s Box.

Library story time
Preschool Story Time for ages 3 to 5 will meet at the Vashon Library at 2 p.m. Tuesdays, June 17 to Aug. 5.
Kids are welcome for 30 minutes of stories, songs and fun.

The Vashon Island Growers Association (VIGA) will host the first annual Nutrition and Wellness Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at the Farmers Market in the Village Green.
This event will highlight the health benefits of fresh local food as well as the wide variety of life-enhancing practices and health care available to people on Vashon Island. Several Island health care providers will give a demonstration of their work.

The seventh annual Friends of the National Rifle Association (NRA) Banquet and Auction will be at the Vashon Sportsmen’s Club, 19720 Singer Rd. S.W. on Saturday, June 21. The social hour begins at 5 p.m. The dinner and auction begin at 7 p.m.

The Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit invites the Vashon community to a summer solstice walk from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 22. Circle of Sound will play. They will surround the labyrinth, creating a sound vessel through the harmonic frequencies of crystal bowls and didgeridoos.

The next Vashon-Maury Island Chamber of Commerce general membership meeting will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, June 26, at Courthouse Square. Coffee and pastries will be offered. People should bring their business cards for networking; everyone is welcome.

Gospel choir forms
Islanders are invited to join the “Gospel In the Park” choir at Bethel Church.
Rehearsals will be held at Bethel from 7 to 8:30 p.m. beginning June 30 and continuing July 1, 3, 7, 8 and 10.
The group will sing at Ober Park betweem 1:15 and 2 p.m. Sunday July 13, for the Strawberry Festival crowd.
