New website shows number of car spots available on ferries

Washington State Ferries (WSF) is piloting a new webpage that shows in real time how many vehicle spaces are available on upcoming sailings.

WSF’s new terminal conditions page, linked on the WSF home page, provides an estimate of available vehicle spaces on several upcoming sailings on any of the state’s ferry routes.

“Seeing the number of available vehicle spaces in real time for an upcoming sailing helps our customers make an informed decision about their travel plans,” said ferries director David Moseley in a press release.

WSF calculates the approximate number of available spaces for each sailing by taking each ferry’s car capacity and deducting the number of vehicle fares collected at the tollbooth or dock. On Vashon, since fares aren’t collected when riders leave the island, the website will show available space only for boats coming to Vashon.

Ferry officials hope the new webpage will help riders plan ahead and encourage travel during non-peak times.

The webpage also provides live video feeds of the terminals and ferry lines, something that was already available on WSF’s website.

To visit the terminal conditions page, go to www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries and click “Terminal Conditions.” Feedback on the page can be sent to wsfrealtimefeedback@wsdot.wa.gov.
