No change in PO boat fares
No change in PO boat fares
Despite rising fuel costs, the King County Ferry District has decided not to raise rates on the Vashon-downtown Seattle passenger ferry after assuming costs of providing the service this month.
A one-time ride on the ferry, from Seattle to Vashon will remain at $8.70. The ride leaving Vashon is free, as with the car ferries.
See page A3 for a story on proposed fare increases for Metro.
Back-to-school drive revs up
The annual back-to-school fundraising drive, sponsored by the Vashon PTSA, begins Aug. 1, when donation and drop-off bins go up at businesses around town, including Thriftway, Essentials 4 and US Bank.
The drive, now in its sixth year, raises money and goods for Island families in need of basic school supplies. Any leftover cash is given to the schools so that students can get school supplies throughout the year.
New this year is a rummage sale to raise funds for the drive, which will occur from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, in the Vashon Theatre parking lot. At least 50 percent of the proceeds from the day’s sales will go to the drive. Those interested in participating can come that morning between 8 and 8:45 a.m. and set up a stall.
Last year, the drive brought in more than $3,000 in cash and school supplies. Those who want to support the effort can send a check to Bob and Lauri Hennessey, Vashon PTSA Back to School Drive, P.O. Box 2364, Vashon, 98070. For information or to volunteer, e-mail them at email@example.com or call 463-1931.
Hammond plays benefit concert
Legendary blues performer John Hammond will perform at the Vashon Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 31. The concert will benefit Vashon Youth & Family Services’ school-based programs and Vashon Island Rotary Club’s international efforts in Guatemala.
Tickets for the performance, $20, are available at Books by the Way and the Vashon Theatre. A pre-concert party will start at 6 p.m. under tents in the theater’s parking lot. A lasagna dinner and beer and wine service will be provided at additional cost. No reservations are necessary.
Cough it up
Tickets are still available for Vashon Island Pet Protectors’ Fur Ball, which will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at the VFW Hall.
More than 400 items will be up for bid. Finger food and beverages will be served. Daryl Redeker will play original guitar music.
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at Books by the Way, Fair Isle Animal Clinic, Pandora’s Box and Vashon Bookshop. Proceeds from the Fur Ball make up half of Vashon Island Pet Protectors’ yearly operating expenses.
