CLASSES

Birds

The Enjoyment of Birds, a series of evening classes for beginning and more experienced birders, starts at 7 p.m. tonight, Sept. 10, at the Land Trust Building.

Each class is designed to build on the previous session as participants learn the birds by their appearance, seasonal occurrence, habitat and song.

The beginner session includes the Sept. 10 class as well as a special “Gardening for Birds” workshop and garden tour on Sunday, Sept. 14. The advanced beginner series includes the above and continues on Wednesday, Oct. 10, followed by monthly sessions on the second Wednesday of the month through March (except December).

Field trips to Vashon’s birding hot spots follow on the Saturday after each class.

The beginner class costs $20 for Vashon Audubon members and $35 for nonmembers; the fee is transferrable to the advanced beginner series. The advanced beginner series costs $70 for members and $85 for nonmembers.

Homeowners can help protect their investment and the environment by knowing what to plant and what not to plant on or near their drainfields. There are creative alternatives to lawns.

Participants have a chance to win coupons for a free septic tank inspection and $150 off a tank pump-out, if needed. Please pre-register by contacting Susie Kalhorn at 463-4006 or burnhorn@earthlink.net.
