Talented teen musicians from Vashon High School and McMurray Middle School bands will perform a solo and ensemble recital at 6:30 p.m. Wedesday, April 13 at Vashon Methodist Church.

The recital will showcase a select group of young musicians — including a record number of sixth graders who performed solos, duets and in small ensembles at a recent regional competition — and those who will compete later in the month at the State Solo/Ensemble Competition in Ellensburg.

High school students who are going to the state contest this year include Brooks Benner on alto bass clarinet, Aiden Morrison on classical guitar, Peyton Levin on multiple percussion, and 2010 state multiple percussion champion Dylan Greene on mallets.

The VHS Percussion Ensemble will also return to the competition this year.

The concert on Wednesday, April 13 will be a chance to listen to the percussion ensemble and other accomplished young musicians — and support the vibrant music scene led by Ken Quehrn at Vashon High School and McMurray.

Admission is by donation, with all proceeds going to help defray the costs of the band programs.
