Listen up for a night of jazz tunes
October 20, 2011 · Updated 11:46 AM
Island jazz aficionados are in for a treat: Renowned guitarist, composer and recording artist Mimi Fox will play a concert at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Blue Heron.
Winner of six consecutive Downbeat Magazine international critic’s polls, Fox has been lauded by colleagues and fans alike as one of today’s most eloquent jazz guitarists. Guitar Player Magazine called her “a prodigious talent who has not only mastered the traditional forms but has managed to reinvigorate them.”
She has nine recordings to her credit and has performed all over the world, sharing stages with such greats as Charlie Bird, Branford Marsalis and Stevie Wonder.
She’s also a noted jazz educator, having served as head of the guitar program at the Jazz School in Berkeley as well as an adjunct professor at New York University. Fox has also made a name for herself by teaching workshops and performing in prison settings.
Tickets to Fox’s show, $15/$18, are on sale at the Blue Heron, Heron’s Nest, Island book stores and www.brownpapertickets.
