Buy tickets for Garden Tour

Bill Deaton, 90, is putting the finishing touches on the bountiful Burton garden he shares with daughter Linda Rhodes. The Rhodes/Deaton garden, with spectacular harbor views, is one of five gardens people can meander through for the annual Vashon Island Garden Tour on June 21 and 22.

Tickets are available now with $5 discount until May 31 and include free seminars, music, art, poetry and more.

Call Blue Heron, Heron’s Nest or Dig Floral & Garden for more information and tickets. See the Web site vashonalliedarts.org.

Market music

begins

The Vashon Farmers Market Saturday music series opens for the summer with the band BeSides at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24.

Local musicians Dan Brown, Eric Frith, Kim Thal and Rick Vanselow make up the acoustic quartet. Drawing heavily from both traditional American music and contemporary songwriters, BeSides offers up a broad swath of cover tunes, with a few originals thrown into the mix.

Expect plenty of vocal harmonies as well as seldom-covered songs that will sound instantly familiar.

Café Luna hosts films

Peter Ray and Lunavision are sponsoring free monthly film nights for citizens who question the major media versions of important issues.

The film nights will meet the fourth Thursday of each month. This month’s film is “The Reflecting Pool”; it will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 22, at Café Luna.

“The Reflecting Pool” is the first investigative drama to challenge the official version of Sept. 11.

For more information about the film, see www.reflectingpoolfilm.com.

Guitarist

visits schools

Guitar virtuoso Andre Feriante will be performing for fifth-grade students at Chau-tauqua Elemen-tary School and seventh- and eighth-grade band students at McMurray Middle School on Thursday, May 22.

Feriante, born in Italy and formally trained in Spanish classical guitar, will share guitar traditions from many continents, as well as his interest in poetry and song.

His visit is part of the Vashon Artists in Schools’ Ethnic Artist Series, providing opportunities for Island students to experience music and dance forms from faraway places. Vashon Artists in Schools is a collaborative partnership between Vashon Island School District and Vashon Allied Arts.
