Karen Cushman, a Newbery Award-winning Island author, will read from her latest book, “Alchemy and Meggy Swan,” at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 15, at Books by the Way. The bookstore event will also include special snacks and activities for kids.

The book, published by Clarion Books, takes place in Elizabethan England and tells the story of a young country girl who is sent to live with her father in the teeming, filthy city of London.

Aimed at young adult readers, “Alchemy and Meggy Swan” has garnered high praise and rave reviews, including one from Kirkus Reviews that called it “a gem.”
