Letter to the Editor: Maybe there’s a creative solution to solving the ferry deficit
December 20, 2010 · 11:58 AM
OK, another ferry fare increase! It always seems to be the way of the world. Give tax cuts, but raise how much it costs to live in our world.
Forgive me, as we have only lived on Vashon for one and a half years, but would it not seem more prudent to charge the public for the quarterly ferry schedules we all pick up. If the Washington State Ferry folks would charge, say, 50 cents apiece at every reprint of the new schedule, how much money would that raise toward the budget deficit of $14 million? Four times a year times 50 cents per person for everyone who wants a schedule would add up and not, I think, be too painful. Has this been proposed before?
I would love to here the public’s opinion. But remind them we need to do something, and soon!
