Letter to the Editor: Librarian’s move to Burien a loss to Vashon

We were saddened to read that Vashon head librarian, Hester Kremer, is being transferred to the Burien Library (“A Librarian Bids Adieu,” Dec. 15) as part of a “pilot project.” Her capable and competent leadership has been a major contribution to our amazing library during her tenure.

The Burien community will now get the benefit of her “specialized skills... [which will be] dedicated to professional activities, such as in-library services, outreach to the community and online content development.”

And how does this King County Library System pilot project benefit Vashon Library? It doesn’t.

Vashon is losing a librarian who is an Islander and knows our community inside and out. Will another librarian replace Ms. Kremer? The busy Vashon library seems to be losing 40 hours each week of professional staff time dedicated to one of our best community resources.

(Full disclosure: Andrea is a former KCLS librarian now employed as the librarian of a regional public agency. She subs occasionally at the Vashon Library.)
