For many years now I have been following the plight of the honeybee. It has been distressing to read about the collapse of bee colonies all over America and now our little island. However, I was the most distressed to hear that a group of islanders have taken it upon themselves to threaten and intimidate island business owners and their employees if they don’t stop selling the suspected bee-killing products.
As a dog owner who often walks her two rescued foster dogs in Dockton Forest, I respectfully ask other dog enthusiasts to please keep their animals on a leash while enjoying the trails
I am writing regarding last week’s letter about Thriftway’s new gun policy.
In responding to the letter from Clair Englander (“Thriftway has crossed a line with gun owners,” July 9), I do not wish to debate the ethics of gun control or concealed weapons. I would like to discuss the statement that if a gun massacre happened, “it would not be one of our Vashon gun owners” but “some mentally ill person.”
Regarding the article about honeybee decline (“Honeybee decline causes concern on Vashon,” July 9), there is one thing that wasn’t mentioned.
This is a call to action in response to Bob Dixon’s intelligent letter regarding the chemicals that are killing the bees (“Consider the impact of chemicals that kill bees,” June 25).
Thriftway is now a “no weapons, no drugs” zone. What in the world? Vashon is a small community with a thriving Sportsmen’s Club, many hunters and many longtime residents who carry concealed. I just can’t think why Thriftway needs this sign other than to jump on the bandwagon of “think with your emotions” anti-gun sentiment.
It broke my heart to hear of the PlaySpace having to cut its programs due to loss of funding. I’m hoping there are angel donors out there that will support this vital program to families with small children
On page 18 of the June 18 Beachcomber, we were informed that Meaghan Connor received a Bachelor of Art’s. I have to know: How many bachelors does Art have? Does Art routinely award his bachelors to people, or is it stiff competition to receive one?
Vashon enjoyed its third year of injury-free fireworks usage last year; however, there was a fire on July 4. Initially it was thought that a sky lantern had ignited the house, but an investigation revealed that the cause was a spark from yard work activities.
The Vashon-Maury Island Coop-erative Preschool recently relocated from its home at the PlaySpace to the former King County court room at Courthouse Square.
In March, Water District 19 finished installing a set of pressure-reducing valves in its distribution system, with the aim of lowering pressure that was in some areas above Department of Health (DOH) guidelines. High pressure increases the chance of distribution leakage, and it also puts appliances, like hot water heaters, at risk
Yesterday I brought home an empty beehive. It consisted of two hive boxes for the bees and a “super” for them to fill with honey so I could have some. This hive was empty. About a month ago, it was full of bees and looked to be a promising honey producer. It was in full sun as well, and the weather has been good.
