Concert features masters of traditional Irish music

A traditional Irish music concert by acclaimed button accordionist John Whelan and up-and-coming fiddler Haley Richardson will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, at the Vashon Havurat, 15401 Westside Highway.

Whelan, a seven-time all-Ireland champion, is a button accordion player who was raised in the vibrant London Irish music scene of the 1970s. He moved to the U.S. in 1980. He was twice named “Musician of the Year” from the Irish Music Association. He has more than 15 CDs to his credit and has performed on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.” Whelan is also a composer and producer, and his music has been featured on TV shows, including “Sex in the City.” Currently, he performs with the John Whelan Band and has also teamed up with his old pal Brian Conway to form the group Gailfean.

Richardson began making her mark in the Irish music world as a 6-year-old, when she won the All Ireland qualifier in the under 12 category. In the last 10 years, she has amassed many accomplishments and performed at venues across the United States, Ireland, United Kingdom and Thailand. She is the 2017 All Ireland U15 Fiddle slow air champion, 2015 Junior Fiddler of Dooney and 2013 All Ireland U12 Champion in both fiddle and fiddle slow airs. Richardson has performed with many of the most well-known names in Irish music, including The Chieftains, Altan, Dervish and Mick Moloney, and is a regular member of Green Fields of America and The John Whelan Band.

Her CD debut, produced by Whelan, was “Heart on a String.” In March 2017, Richardson released “Music for Mercy,” a compilation album she produced featuring donated tracks from many of the best Irish musicians 21 years old and younger, from around the world.
