First Friday gallery cruise features bright colors and new artists

Island native Gianna Andrews will exhibit new paintings at Café Luna in a show called “Home Is Where Mountains Melt to Sea.” Her art is inspired by her “roots to island life in the Pacific Northwest” along with the town of Bozeman, Montana, where she discovered her love for painting. These paintings display the contrast between urbanization and open spaces.

Hastings-Cone Gallery will show images by Swedish photographer Helga Jonsson in an exhibit called “The Spirit of Sardinia.” Jonsson splits her time between Sweden, where she owns and runs an art gallery/school complex, and the village of Cuglieri on Sardinia, where she met gallery owners Megan Hastings and Adam Cone.“Megan and Adam have renovated a vacation house in my village of Cuglieri, and we met at a countryside Easter lunch. I took the opportunity to visit them on Vashon when I was travelling along the West Coast in 2015,” Jonsson said. “I was really curious to see Snapdragon after they’d told me all about it. After seeing my photographs, they invited me to exhibit and asked me to exhibit images from Sardinia to show the Vashon people some of the pearl in the Mediterranean.” There will be a champagne reception for the artist on Friday.

Raven’s Nest will introduce new enamel jewelry from the collection of Alaskan Haida artist Janine Gibbons. Her work is well-known in the Northwest and exhibited in art galleries and in gift shops. She draws inspiration for her work from the island of her youth in Southeastern Alaska and from the mountains of her home in Colorado. Raven’s Nest will also introduce new jewelry, apparel and gifts for the home, all featuring Northwest Native imagery. The gallery will offer a First Friday giveaway for all customers who make purchases of $25 or more.

Three island businesses — RO Remodeling, Sarah’s Salon and Seeds for Success — will celebrate the opening of their new offices housed in the space between Thriftway and Eyeland Optical. On display will be paintings by island artist Christy Marsh. Vocalist Christine Goering will sing, accompanied by deejay and musician Michael Whitmore.

S.A.W. will feature Naked Truth Beauty, healthy and sustainable make-up created by Lauren Evashenk. All the handmade products are produced in small batches on Vashon and made from organic, unrefined and non-GMO ingredients. All packaging is biodegradable. Evashenk will be at the opening to give application tutorials and let visitors try on the brand’s cream lipsticks, blushes, eyeshadows and highlighters. For more information, visit nakedtruthbeauty.com.

Margaret Tylczak Heffelfinger is known for her whimsical dog, cat and occasional sheep portraits. Seen in galleries in Austin, Portland, and Minneapolis, and on the island at Heron’s Nest and Silverwood Gallery, which she co-owned with husband Eric for 18 years, the artist has added a new animal to her stable — the walrus. The portly fellows donned in bright colors will be on display at The Hardware Store Restaurant, no doubt accompanied by some clever comments written by the former award-winning copywriter and newspaper columnist.

Kristen Reitz-Green is the artist of the month at VALISE Gallery. “Uncharted Waters” includes more bold colors and shapes by the well known island artist, but this exhibit “takes an even more intimate view of well known objects … and a step into abstraction.” The recent political upheaval spurred Reitz-Green to dive into her own uncharted waters that led to highly conceptual, simple forms. Eric Heffelfinger curated the show.

Vashon Center for the Arts/Koch Gallery will show the paintings of Kenyan artist Ken Nyambura, who has exhibited internationally in France, Denmark, Germany and Italy. Laura Castellanos’ soft sculptures made from fabric, pigment and buttons will also be on display.

Vashon Senior Center will show new paintings by island artist Kathy Larsdotter, who continues to explore the places she’s visited and loved.
