Island band plays a special show

The longtime island band Subconscious Population will play a free show to celebrate front man Ron Hook’s 70th birthday at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Red Bike.

The original band dates back to 1980, with different members coming and going, but always centered around Hook. Santana was an early musical influence, but Sub-Pop soon created its own sound with a blend of reggae, jazz, blues, rock and country. Hook, Richard Lipke and Steve Brix will play their classic songs, as well as their own spin on several covers.

The band prides itself on getting folks onto the dance floor.

“It’s a pretty iconic island band that’s been around for a lot of years, and they’re still on fire,” Vashon Events Co-founder Pete Welch said. “This show will be even more special because it’s Ron Hook’s 70th birthday.”

Jacob Bain and Patrick Bennion will open the show with songs they’ve written about Ron specifically for his birthday show, to pay respect to the man who mentored them through the years.

Both Bain and Bennion grew up on the island and were two of many musicians Ron took under his wing “and made music pretty special in their lives.”

The show is open to all until 11 p.m., then ages 21 and older only.
