Juno-winning banjoist and composer performs at VCA this weekend

Two-time Juno Award-winning banjoist and composer Jayme Stone will perform a show featuring songs from his most recent album, “Folklife,” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Kay White Hall.

“Folklife” evolved out of Stone’s Lomax Project, which focused on songs collected by folklorist and field recording pioneer Alan Lomax and brought together some of North America’s most distinctive musicians to re-imagine traditional music — from vibrant Sea Island spirituals and Creole calypsos to stomp-down Appalachian dance tunes.

Often called the “Yo-Yo Ma of the banjo,” Stone finds musical inspiration from around the world, bridging folk, jazz and chamber music. His award-winning albums both defy and honor the banjo’s long role in the world’s music,

Saturday’s concert will feature Stone (banjo, voice), Moira Smiley (voice, accordion), Sumaia Jackson (fiddle, voice) and Joe Phillips (bass, voice).

Tickets are sold at Vashon Center for the Arts and vashoncenterforthearts.org.
