Kinetic art celebration at Open Space

A five-year work in progress will come to fruition Saturday with the opening of the Kinetic Sculpture Garden in the 10-acre meadow adjacent to the Open Space for Arts &Community building. Two other kinetic events will follow: Kinetic Arts Camp beginning Monday, July 17, and the Kinetic Arts Explosion Opening Day, slated for Saturday, July 22.

Over the last five years, Open Space has developed a large-scale vision of outdoor, interactive, kinetic art centered around oversized sculptures inspired by the art of Rube Goldberg.

With a grant from 4Culture, the concept began its evolution in the summer of 2012, when creative team Jon Carlson and Dave Olsen built a large kinetic sculpture inside Open Space’s Grand Hall. At the same time, Open Space produced The Art of Physics &Comedy Camp. Next, artists Ela Lamblin, Ken C. Judd and Jon Schroeder installed three outdoor, kinetic putt-putt golf installations. Now, Open Space celebrates the culmination of these events with the Kinetic Arts Explosion.

The outdoor sculpture garden will feature large-scale installations by Seattle-based multi-media and metal-assemblage artist Cathy McClure plus the island artist collective with Bernadette LaCarte and Julia Anderson. Visual storyteller LaCarte’s collaborative group of production artists Leslie Zenz, David Marine and Monica Gripman share their love of interactive, experimental art to connect people through shared dynamic experiences. Anderson’s pinwheels will bring color and motion to the meadow.

The Kinetic Sculpture Garden will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The Kinetic Arts Camp (session one), for ages 7 to 12, will launch on Monday, July 17, and run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Open Space. The camp will be led by artist/naturalist Barbara Gustafson. Session two will run from August 7 to 11.

The Kinetic Arts Explosion Opening Day festivities will take place from 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday, July 22, and continue on Sunday, July 23. Refreshments and snacks will be available, or bring a picnic.
