Salish Sea festival returns

Virtuoso works from the early 19th century golden age for flute and guitar will be performed on authentic early 19th century instruments by the Salish Sea Early Music Festival at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 20 at Bethel Church.

John Schneiderman will play guitar and Jeffrey Cohan will play the eight-keyed flute.

The duo will play the works of Mauro Giuliani, an Italian guitarist, cellist, singer and composer. He was a leading guitar virtuoso of the early 19th century.

The Salish Sea’s website explains that in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the industrial revolution helped bring in a more expressive trend in music, less affected by stylistic constraints of the past. “This emerging early 19th century romanticism and new tonal expectations of musical instruments brought about a new chemistry between flutists and guitarists, a blossoming of guitar-flute repertoire by virtuosos on their evolving instruments, and a golden age for the flute-guitar duo.”

Tickets are a suggested donation of $15, $20 or $25, but pay what you can. Ages 18 and under are free.
