The Vashon Film Society kicks off its 2016-17 Art Film Series with “Girl Asleep,” the Australian coming-of-age story that captured the Seattle International Film Festival’s (SIFF) 2016 Grand Jury Prize. The film will be shown at 8:30 p.m. Thursday and at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Vashon Theatre.

Now in its fifth season, the film society’s goal for the series is to showcase critically acclaimed indie, foreign and documentary films at the Vashon Theatre to align with the island’s monthly art walk. New for this year, the series has expanded to two screenings — Thursday evenings and Friday matinees — to allow cinema fans two chances to see film festival fare on Vashon.

Tickets are available at the box office.
