VCA Garden Tour blooms again

Vashon Center for the Arts’ annual Garden Tour will return on Saturday and Sunday after a one-year hiatus, during which the organization celebrated the opening of the Katherine L White Hall. Showcasing four gardens and one working farm, the tour will also include a special showing of the historic Mukai House and Garden. The original Japanese gardens and farm are currently in the early stages of renovation.

First up, at the north end, Julie King and Lisa Caldwell’s cultivated garden offers a panoramic view of Puget Sound, Blake Island and Mount Baker, along with whimsical secrets, including cast-glass artwork by Barbara Wells. A quaint studio in the corner of the yard is home to Willow Street Woodshop.

Further south, Blue Moon Farm is an agricultural garden created by Eddy and Kevin Hoffberg. Visitors can wander past wildflowers and bee hives. The organic gardens include vegetables grown in traditional rows and straw-bale beds plus a trellised orchard with more than 75 apple trees. The garden features wood and sheep-wool functional artwork by Sonja Bergstrom.

Nestled on the shores of Fern Cove, the two-acre garden of Lisa and Jonathan Morse includes eclectic gardens ranging from an alpine garden to a working kitchen garden and vegetable beds, specimen trees and specialty plants. Steel sculptures by Sue Carette and mosaic sculptures by Elaine Summers are featured.

On the sound, the waterfront garden of Linda and Richard Sedgley is tied together with flowing pathways around the house, rhododendron gardens, a large pond and outbuildings.

The Quartermaster Harbor waterfront property of Shelley and Sam Williams includes a koi pond, the largest mason bee population on the island, a greenhouse, mature rhododendrons and shade garden highlighted by specimen lilies.

The Mukai House and Garden, a site both Landmarked and on the National Register of Historic Places, is in the first of three phases of restoration after 20 years of neglect. Asian-inspired concrete and mosaic statuary by Alex Echevarria is featured art at this stop.

In addition to the gardens, horticultural experts — Melissa Schafer, Joshua Barwick, Tom Conway, Sue Day, Jerry Gehrke, Howard Stenn, Henry Haselton, Rachel Waldron and Bob Norton — will be speaking in the gardens throughout the weekend.

Music from Ike Harmon, Lady Gator and the Swamp Guise, Acoustic Caravan, Arioso Ensemble and Geordie’s Byre will also be heard in the gardens at designated times throughout the weekend.

Tickets are $30 and available at VCA, Heron’s Nest Gallery and online at vashoncenterforthearts.org. The gardens will be open for touring from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more information, visit vashoncenterforthearts.org.

The event’s Garden Party will be held at 6 p.m. Friday in the garden of Steve Jensen and Mark Grace on the Burton Penninsual overlooking Quartermaster Harbor and the marina. Live music by RiverBend, gourmet cuisine by Herban Feast, wines by Andrew Will and Palouse Wineries and signature cocktails will all be part of the evening’s festivities.

Limited tickets for Friday’s Garden Party are still available by calling VCA at 206.463.5131.
