A winning photo

Mica Gaxiola, a senior at Vashon High School where she’s in the Student Link program, submitted this week’s winning photo for The Beachcomber’s teen photo contest. The photo, she said, was taken in the backyard at a friend’s house on Maury Island, where she, her brothers and several friends have built a large cabin replete with tunnels that they call the “catacombs.” The cabin was damaged by the wind storm last year, she said, and several teens have been working to fix it up. “Lately the music scene on Vashon has fizzled, and me and my friends hold shows there and get bands to play,” she said in an e-mail to The Beachcomber. “We’ve had two concerts already ... It gives kids on Vashon a place to go and get inspired.” Are you a teen who has taken a photo that says something about your life on Vashon? If so, send it to The Beachcomber at editor@vashonbeachcomber.com. You could win two tickets to the Vashon Theatre. -
