Keeping the cold out
Apr 26 2008, 2:59 AM Islander Hilary Emmer’s home is only nine years old, and as such needs no weatherization updates. But the self-described “community-minded” go-getter pushed Puget Sound Energy (PSE) anyway, in the names of those with single-paned windows and leaky floorboards. At first, the energy company said their weatherization rebate program was not open to Island residents, since no insulation specialists would trek to Vashon for just one job.

Glacier considered
Apr 26 2008, 2:58 AM Take a walk along the stretch of beach where Glacier Northwest wants to excavate millions of tons of gravel over the next 40 years or so, and the debate over the proposed mine expansion becomes as clear as a bright winter day.

This is a beautiful stretch of the Island — both quiet and full of life. Eagles, cormorants, grebes and hawks abound here. Whales cruise past during the winter months. Just a stone’s throw down the beach, at Sandy Shores, a string of homes lines the beachfront road, mostly modest, cabin-like houses that have been there for years.

Juxtapose that picture with a state-of-the-art, steel pier stretching 400 feet into the Sound and sluicing sand and gravel into barges 12 hours a day, five days a week. With bulldozers working the headland above, mowing down the tangled madrone forest as it carves the hillside into huge mounds of dirt. With 192 acres — one of the largest expanses on the Island — turned over to gravel-mining.

On our little Island, with limited development opportunities and funding sources, many non-profits would love a chance to improve their facilities. Even the library needs a new home. What about the dream of an indoor composting facility or a year-round pool? The now-empty K2 building is so big and varied, it seems large enough to embrace every dream.
