In response to the “Vote Yes on I-522” op-ed in The Beachcomber recently, (“Know what’s in your food, vote ‘yes’ on I-522,” Oct. 9) who could possibly be against better labeling and consumer information? I’m not a big seed or chemical company, and I don’t work for one, but I can think of a few reasons to vote no on I-522

Reading the article in last week’s Beachcomber about the state of Washington’s effort to test and clean up 700 Vashon-Maury Island homes, (“State begins wide soil cleanup effort, Oct. 9”) caused me to reflect on the debt of gratitude we owe three heroic islanders who made this all possible.

I agree with Greg Beardsley that the limited through-put of the Fauntleroy ferry dock is a major reason for problems with the triangle route serving Vashon and Southworth. (“Islanders must speak up soon for quality service,” Oct. 9.) However, hiring an officer to direct traffic is just one possible solution. Why not install a traffic light at the end of the dock so that offloading traffic has priority? This would have the bonus of protecting pedestrians crossing busy Fauntleroy Way.

Ringed by beautiful homes dating to the founding of Weyerhauser Corporation, American Lake was also festooned with colorful maples on Sunday, and in sharp contrast to last fall’s regatta there, it provided a smooth rowing venue for Vashon’s crew team

Vashon could see less snowplowing service this winter, as county budget cuts mean road workers from the mainland can no longer back up Vashon’s small snow removal crew during a widespread storm.

With election season at hand, the races for three seats on the board of the Vashon Park District — an agency that has had considerable financial trouble and drawn public criticism — is drawing particular attention. The Beachcomber recently asked the six candidates for the park board to answer a few questions each about why they should be elected. We have printed their answers as they sent them to us, with only minor editing.

Nestled against the backdrop of Whitehorse Mountain, the Pirates took on the Loggers in Darrington Stadium Friday night under crystal clear skies. A large contingent of Vashon fans made the three-hour journey north to cheer on their Pirate team. Despite the enthusiastic crowd, the Loggers pulled away early with 14 points in the first quarter, paving the way to a victory in a game that was plagued by frequent turnovers by both teams.

It’s been said that Vashon’s ferry advocates — a small group of islanders who campaign for sustained ferry service — seem to “cry wolf.” Annually these volunteer ferry watchdogs warn us that state budget cuts could cancel sailings if residents don’t make their objections known. And annually the Legislature comes up with 11th-hour funding for the ferries, avoiding the proposed cuts and leading to a laissez-faire attitude among islanders.
