With the Northwest’s dry season approaching, the Vashon Park District has applied for a permit for a water right at the Vashon Fields Project, and a public comment period on that permit request is set to begin soon.

As I’m nearing the end of my two-plus terms on the Vashon Park District board, I urge good-hearted, intelligent and hard-working islanders to consider running for a seat on one of our elected island boards. The school board, the park board, the fire board and a patchwork of other island districts have positions open for the fall 2013 election.

It is very disheartening when one is the victim of theft, and the recent break-in at Pandora’s Box has left us here at Ferret Shelter Northwest supremely disappointed. Very little was taken because they leave no cash in the register at night, and money was apparently what the burglar sought.

Last spring a large group of islanders spent 24 hours at the Neill Point Natural Area photographing bugs, live-trapping animals, listening for bird songs and scouring the shoreline at low tide to see what sea creatures were unveiled.

Islanders are justified in expressing their concern about the recent health care merger. They are entitled to their opinions about Catholicism, and the Franciscans ought to be able to give satisfactory answers about what “Catholic health care” means. Unfortunately, a majority of people misunderstand Catholic beliefs.

he news that Bank of America is abandoning Vashon Island is appalling. This community is more than an arbitrary pinpoint on a map. Fully one-third of the community uses Bank of America here. There is a thriving business community that makes deposits every day, not to mention regular customers.

Three Vashon High School athletes competed in the 1A state track and field championships last weekend, and one returned with a medal from the prestigious tournament. Two young islanders who attend private schools in Seattle also put forward award-winning performances at State, which took place at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

Having been a fitness instructor at the Vashon Park District for nearly four years, I have had a front-row seat to the dramas and goings-on there. My feeling of pride in being a part of this organization has continually eroded over that time.
