For the past 12 years, Dr. Kim Farrell has cared for countless Islanders — the majority of them women — at the Vashon Health Center. She’s seen some of them through difficult diagnoses, come late at night to tend to emergencies, helped others find ways to live healthier lives.

Dozens of islanders welcomed the new year on Tuesday by participating in a polar bear swim at KVI Beach. Several held hands as they dived into the chilly waters — according to weather reports, Puget Sound was around 49 degrees. Dogs took to the waters, too.

A talented ensemble of islanders will perform Gian Carlo Menotti’s famous opera, “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” this weekend — closing out the Christmas season by marking the ancient church holiday of the Epiphany.
