Walk on Vashon’s Wild side

This summer experts in fields such as wild edibles, meditation, butterflies, native plants and local ecology will lead hikers on a number of park trails throughout the Island, using maps developed by Vashon Park District and the Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust. Each month, beginning in June, the Vashon Park District, the land trust and the Social Ecology Education and Demonstration School (SEEDS) will co-sponsor one unique walk, offering a direct form of ecological education, the sense of place and a form of exercise and community engagement.

Dr. Caroline Brinkley will offer the class “Menopause and Hormones: Beyond Premarin” from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight, June 11, at Vashon Family Practice. The class is intended to help women understand the risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy and alternative treatments. It is the final class in a free health series the clinic has offered this spring.

The Back Bay Inn will hold the first dinner in its “Taste the World Guest Chef Series,” featuring Japanese cuisine from chef Paul Motoyoshi at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 9. The five-course excursion into Japanese fare includes such dishes as chicken tempura with lotus roots and a soba noodle fan, pan-grilled orange miso salmon with deep-fried walnuts and a side of dragon sushi and plum ice cream.

Ann and George Lewis, Islanders who have spent considerable time in Rwanda, will speak at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, June 8, to the Unitarians. The fuse was long, but Rwanda exploded in a flash in April 1994.  Genocide ensued.  In 1996 Ann and George Lewis took a three-year assignment to Rwanda with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), George to re-launch and direct the USAID program there.

Vashon Islanders' replica of award-winning hydroplane is one stylish ride

This weekend, a replica of the 1950s hydroplane Miss Thriftway will take to the water in Lake Sammamish, skating on top of the water at 130 miles an hour. The boat — a replica of the one made famous by Bill Muncey, one of the best hydroplane racers of the sport’s heyday — was created by 10 people, many Islanders, a labor of love by a group of men who relish the sport.

Vashon man honors friend's memory with tireless AIDS awareness work

Larry Flynn lives on a back road, but he’s a strong presence on Vashon. His small green house, surrounded by native woods and cultivated gardens, overlooks Puget Sound. There’s a walking trail down the steep bank to a beach below, where an osprey lands as we talk. Flynn explains that he inherited the house from his friend John Thompson, who died almost 20 years ago of AIDS.

League track finals wrap for Vashon athletes on Bainbridge

Under cloudy skies, Vashon took 29 McMurray Middle School athletes to Bainbridge Island for the league finals in track and field. The races were exciting, and many athletes set personal records in field events.

Vashon's Blue Heron to feature woodwork, works of woods June 6

Rebecca Dvorin Strong, known for her abiding interest in dark and light interiors and landscapes, began a new series of tree paintings in fall 2006. These oils and gouaches will be featured, along with fine woodworking by Island artist Steven Caldwell, at Blue Heron Gallery in June. The exhibition will open 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 6, with a reception with the artists, refreshments, and live music by Richard Person, Jim Hobson and George Heidorn.
