McDermott and Toledo, Fitzgibbon and Heavey advance in primary election

Sen. Joe McDermott will face political newcomer Diana Toledo in the race for the King County Council District 8 seat. McDermott garnered almost 60 percent of the votes counted Tuesday night, while Diana Toledo received nearly 20 percent. Shawn McEvoy received 13 percent and Tim Fahey received 7 percent.

Joe Fitzgibbon and Mike Heavey each earned spots in November's race for the 34th district state House seat, with less than a percent between their results. Fitzgibbon, a 23-year-old former aide to Sharon Nelson, garnered 33.32 percent of counted votes, while Heavey, a former state senator, received 33.43 percent. Geoffrey McElroy received almost 19 percent and Marcee Stone received 14 percent.

Nelson, who currently holds the seat, ran unopposed for state senator and garnered over 95 percent of the vote.
