King County Sheriff's deputies searched in vain early this morning for two men who crashed into a tree with a stolen car on the heavily forested Burton Peninsula and then fled on foot.

The accident took place around 1 a.m. Friday on S.W. Harbor Drive near 95th Place S.W., said Sgt. James Laing, a spokesman for the King County Sheriff's Office. Helicopters were called to the scene to help track the two male occupants of the car.

"There was a long, extensive search in the area," Laing said. "It went throughout most of the night."

The men were not found, and no arrests were made.

Laing said the car the two men had been driving had been reported as stolen.
