Park board to review final draft of 2011 budget

Vashon Park District officials continue to grapple with how to cut 10 percent, or about $131,000, from the district's 2011 budget. A final draft of the budget will likely be presented at Tuesday's meeting of the park district's board of commissioners.

Included in the budget will be the elimination of two maintenance workers — one full time and one three-quarter time — who have already been laid off by the district.

Executive director Wendy Braicks said the maintenance workers will be replaced by one worker who will have wider responsibilities.

The board is looking at additional ways to cut the budget, such as reducing office assistant hours and providing fewer services to sports teams.

The difficult cuts stem from the Island’s decline in property values. Islanders’ home values dropped 12 percent last year, resulting in less revenue to the park district, which collects revenue at a set rate of 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed value.

The public is welcome to comment on the budget at the next board of commissioners meeting, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, at the park district offices at Ober Park.

The board will vote to adopt the budget on Jan. 11.
