Fields campaign misses goal, continues to fundraise

The committee raising funds for the Vashon Athletic Fields project did not meet its goal of securing $300,000 in public donations by the end of 2010.

Allison Shirk, the project’s grant writer, said that although the committee has raised only about $100,000, donations continue to come in. Shirk is confident the remaining funds needed to secure a $500,000 grant from the state will arrive in time to begin construction of the $1.3 million fields complex this spring.

“At this point, it’s a cash flow issue,” Shirk said. “We want to make sure we have enough donations to keep it going, and at this point we have no doubt it will move forward.”

Shirk said several large donations from both on and off the Island came in over the holidays. Additional pending donations, as well as gifts secured during a phone-a-thon planned for Jan. 12, could put the fundraising committee close to its goal, she added.

The committee also continues to sell pavers — one foot square concrete slabs that will tile the Player’s Plaza in the middle of the complex and can be engraved with a name or drawing.
