District forms panel to help shape VHS design

The Vashon Island School District has put together an 11-member design advisory committee comprised of teachers, community members, students and others to provide input as the district begins the work of designing and constructing a new classroom building at Vashon High School.

The advisory group, which has already met once, will meet four times between now and the end of June, helping the school district’s board of directors respond to proposals and offering suggestions as the project goes through its design phase, said Superintendent Michael Soltman.

The group, for instance, will respond to the architect’s initial designs, including how the building is laid out and the arrangement of various spaces, Soltman said. The group will advise the district’s executive committee, made up of Soltman, the architect, the contractor and the project manager.

Committee members in-clude community representatives Jim Garrison, Glynis Delargy, Greg Nespor and Bruce Morser; teachers Tom DeVries and Stephen Floyd; VHS principal Susan Hanson and VHS counselor MJ Hartwell; Eric Gill, the district’s manager of capital facilities; and students Colin Supplee and Shane Kelly.
