More children will be able to participate in Vashon Park District activities thanks to a large donation the district recently received from the David Foege Memorial Fund.

The donation of $25,000 will provide $5,000 a year for five years to the district's reduced fee fund, which this year totaled about $17,500.

The fund provides full or partial scholarships for park district camps, classes and programs to those who qualify based on family income. The donation from the Foege fund, which is managed by his family, was specified for children's tuition only.

Park district program coordinator Susan McCabe said each year some district programs can't afford to provide reduced fees to families, and now more will be able to.

“It's quite significant,” she said.

Families can apply for financial assistance at the park district office at Ober Park.

David Foege was a McMurray Middle School teacher who died in 2007.
