Power outage hits entire Island Monday

October 16, 2012 · Updated 10:04 AM

Vashon lost power for about an hour Monday night after the main transmission line that feeds the Island from the Kitsap Peninsula tripped off, according to a spokeswoman for Puget Sound Energy.

Dorothy Bracken, the spokeswoman, said it’s not clear what caused the transmission line to go down. The line has a tripping mechanism that gets triggered, she said, “if something foreign strikes the line.”

The transmission line traverses several miles, and PSE crews could not determine what triggered the mechanism to trip off the line, she said. After an effort to determine the problem, she said, crews opted to re-energize the transmission line.

“It may have been weather related,” she said. “We just don’t know.”
