Fundraiser under way for ski school program

A Vashon family concerned about the lack of scholarship funds for low-income kids who want to participate in Vashon’s ski school program is making wreaths and holding a raffle in an effort to raise the needed money.

Coco Carson-Rohe, whose two sons have often received scholarship funds from the Vashon Park District, said she’s turning to the community to help raise the money. The park district, facing financial difficulties, announced earlier this fall that it had no more money to hand out to families that qualified for assistance for various park-sponsored programs, including ski school, crew and other club sports.

As a result, Carson-Rohe said, she sold wreaths and raffle tickets last weekend and will again on Friday in front of Thriftway in an effort to raise $5,000 — the amount of money the ski school program and park district put into a fund and handed out to families in scholarships last year.

Raising $5,000 will be difficult, she said. “But I’m totally going for it. I’m hoping people will kick in.”
