The Vashon High School band, under the direction of outgoing teacher Mike Scott, recently traveled to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where it placed first at the Silverwood Music Festival. The band practiced on its way to Idaho, Scott said, by working with Shoreline band director Alec Wilmart. “He helped us refine our sound and complimented the band students repeatedly,” Scott said. The band played “Symphony of Souls” and “Exultate.” Two University of Washington professors judged the contest, giving Vashon a combined score of 187 out of 200. The score qualified the group for a superior rating and gave it the highest score of the high school bands participating, narrowly edging out a band from Kennewick High School, according to Scott. Above, the jazz band, dressed in costumes, performed in a special farewell concert to Scott, who’s leaving after eight years.
