A sign emblazoned with the Starbucks logo and the words "coming soon" greeted Islanders heading to the north-end ferry terminal Thursday — April 1 — alarming some that the mega-chain was planning to set up shop on Vashon.

"We need to stop it. I'm having a fit," said an alarmed Karen du Four des Champs, who called The Beachcomber to report the surprise appearance of the sign.

The Starbucks' corporate office did not return a call today.

The official-looking sign was at the bottom of the so-called ferry hill, where Wild Woman Espresso stood for years.

Some, however, wonder if the sign could be connected to one that appeared several years ago, announcing the arrival of a Burger King. That sign, too, popped up on April 1.

Du Four des Champs, reminded of the date, laughed. "Oh that's a good one," she said.

On Friday morning, the sign was gone.
