Decision expected next week on ferry pilot program at Fauntleroy

Washington State Ferries officials and members of The Triangle Route Improvement Task Force will review data from the pilot program tested at Fauntleroy a few weeks ago and make a determination about implementing it on Tuesday, June 6, after press time.

Originally, ferry officials said they hoped to make a decision two weeks ago, but were delayed because of other problems in the system, including a boat developing a large mechanical problem before Memorial Day weekend and a driver running into the dock controls at Southworth.

Members of the task force, which includes representatives from Vashon, Southworth and Fauntleroy, have been meeting monthly to try to address some of the problems related to the Fauntleroy dock and increased summer traffic. They are just beginning to discuss mid- and long-range solutions for the problematic route.

The meetings are open to the public, but are working meetings for the group and not a time for public comment.

Greg Beardsley, the head of the Vashon Ferry Advisory Committee, is a member of the task force and encouraged islanders to attend, believing attendance would be helpful in understanding some of the constraints on the ferry system at Fauntleroy, in particular.

The meetings — at a location the task force suggested as the most convenient for them — are at Fauntleroy Church located at 9140 California Ave. SW.

After Tuesday’s meeting, future meetings are slated for 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 12; and 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursdays, Aug. 10 and Sept. 14.

Ferry officials said they will also soon begin a campaign to encourage people traveling on the triangle route to purchase their tickets for themselves — and guests — in advance.
