Despite overall defeat, Prop. 1 passed on Vashon

While it was narrowly defeated county-wide, recently certified primary election results show Vashon voters approved the King County measure that proposed a sales tax increase to increase funding for art, science and culture organizations.

A total of 2,305 island voters approved Proposition 1, known as Access for All, during the Aug. 1 election — 1,292 rejected it.

Forty-nine percent of King County voters approved the measure, just short of the required 51 percent simple majority it needed to pass.

If approved, Proposition 1 would have instituted a sales tax increase of 0.1 percent for the next seven years. It was expected to generate $68 million in revenue county-wide to go toward increasing accessibility to arts, science and culture programming. Island organizations such as Vashon Center for the Arts, Vashon Island Chorale, Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association and the Friends of Mukai all could have seen funding from the measure.

In all, 3,597 of Vashon’s 8,673 registered voters cast ballots — a voter turnout of 41 percent. King County’s voter turnout was 34 percent with less than 340,000 of the nearly 1.3 million registered voters casting ballots.
