Food bank to add distribution hours to improve access

As of next week, the Vashon Maury Community Food Bank will expand its hours.

On Tuesdays, beginning March 6, home deliveries will take place as usual. On Wednesday and Thursdays, the food bank will be open from 10:30 to 11 a.m. for seniors and people with disabilities and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Part of this change — the addition of Thursday evening hours plus adding 30 minutes to Wednesday evening hours — came about from conversations last fall between food bank staff and board members and food bank customers. Those conversations revealed the need for increased evening hours to better serve people who work during the day. Also, many of the customers found the distribution times on Wednesday evening to be overly crowded, according to information the food bank’s Rachael Hetrick provided.

Additionally, the food bank has added a second midday distribution on Thursdays to replace its previous Tuesday afternoon distribution times.

“Doing midday distributions on both Wednesdays and Thursdays gives additional opportunities for seniors and persons with disability to shop while ensuring the same variety and quality of food that evening shoppers get is extended to the afternoon shoppers too,” food bank materials state.

Those who have concerns about the new schedule are asked to contact the food bank at info@vashonfoodbank.org or 206-
