Islanders will see their garbage and recycling collection rates increase slightly this month, in part due to fee increases at the King County-run transfer station where the trash is taken.

Vashon Disposal, which provides curb-side garbage pickup on Vashon, will increase its residential rates by 67 cents to $2 a month, depending on the type of service. Customers who have been paying $15.90 a month for weekly pickup of one trash can will pay $17.84 per month this year.

Mark Gingrich, a spokesman for Vashon Disposal, which is managed by the Tacoma-based Murrey’s Disposal, said the increase was due in part to rising costs at the transfer station.

Recycling pickup, which is not included in the garbage fee, will see a much larger increase. The fee for collecting recycling, which the company takes to Tacoma, will increase from $3.90 to $11.48 a month.

The rates, pendingapproval by the state Uti-lities and Transportation Commission, are scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1. Vashon Disposal, he said, has not seen a general rate increase since the early 1990s.

King County raised disposal rates at its eight transfer stations to help cover ongoing efforts to modernize its network of stations. While Vashon’s transfer station is relatively new, some other stations date back to the 1960s and need to be renovated or replaced, said Doug Williams, a spokesman for the county’s Department of Natural Resources and Parks.

The basic rate for dumping trash at the station increased this month from about $117 per ton to $129 per ton, and the minimum fee for dumping will go from $20 to $22.
