Islanders come through for food bank

The Vashon Maury Island Community Food Bank hosted a food drive during the annual island tree lighting on Saturday, Dec. 1. Despite inclement weather, the event, which was sponsored by the Vashon-Maury Island Chamber of Commerce and island merchants, was a success with a great turnout of islanders.

“It was amazing. It seemed like there were three times as many people than in the past,” said Mary Eaves-Mitchell of the food bank, which offered chilly islanders participating in the festivities hot chocolate and cider. At the event, the food bank took in $430 in donations as well as groceries. Opportunities to give to the food bank have occurred throughout the month. Donations can still be made at the food bank, in the designated boxes at island grocery stores or online at bit.ly/2Gxlp21.

Eaves-Mitchell said that the food bank especially has a need for “pop-top” canned goods that are easy to open, best suited for people who have limited cooking facilities, as well as sliced bread and travel-sized toiletries.

Chamber Executive Director Jim Marsh said the credit for the event’s success belongs to islanders.

“The business community came out to support and create an event that all could enjoy. It’s how we’re making our home.”
