Resettlement committee set to bring two families, man to island

After more than a year of fundraising and attempts to bring refugee families to the island, the Vashon Resettlement Committee is actively seeking housing for two families and a single man.

The committee has raised a total of $27,000 that will be used for rent subsidies and other resettlement support as needed for these and other families. One of the families, the Al Mustafa family, has five children. The other, the Alati family, has two children.

Committee member Liz Illg said that a landlord has been found to rent a home that would be suitable for the family of seven.

“We will be working over the summer to spruce it up and prepare everyone for the transition,” she said in a recent email.

Other committee members are looking at apartments for the man, and the hunt is still on for a place for the Alati family.

The families are planning to move to Vashon at the end of June.

The committee’s efforts were also recently recognized by the Muslim Association of Puget Sound (MAPS). A “thank you” event was held earlier this month.
