School district seeks input on community field use

Final work on the new Vashon High School turf field is being completed, but community access has been delayed beyond the end of October, the previously anticipated target date.

The Vashon Island School District will hold a community meeting next week to provide information on field access as well as solicit feedback on options for community access. According to Superintendent Slade McSheehy, the school district’s interests are in providing world class facilities for student programs, ensuring that the community is able to take advantage of the track and field, and implementing policies and procedures that protect the community’s investment for many years to come.

When the field opened to high school sports in September, project manager Brandy Fox said the plan for community access included issuing key cards from the district’s business office to all who wanted to use the facility, but last week, McSheehy said the district is “moving forward with more process.”

The meeting is set for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Vashon High School stadium. In case of bad weather, it will meet in the Vashon High School auditorium.

Director of Facilities Kevin Dickerson, Athletic Director Andy Sears, VHS Principal Danny Rock and McSheehy will be present to listen to community feedback. Several options for access will be discussed. Field access procedures are expected to be finalized shortly after the meeting and then announced.
