State seeking feedback on Maury cleanup plan

King County officials weeks ago held a public meeting to discuss an interim action plan to deal with ASARCO-contaminated soil at the former Glacier site (Maury Island Open Space), but islanders expressed discontent over the recommendation to close some unofficial trails and cap others with gravel. Islanders said capping the trails would be uncomfortable on the feet of animals and people.

The interim plan is part of an agreement between the county and the Washington State Department of Ecology. Under orders from Ecology, the county has agreed to clean up the soil, but given the scale of the project, interim plans are needed while a plan for full-scale clean-up is determined.

Now, Ecology is in the process of gathering feedback on the county’s interim draft cleanup plan.

Proposed cleanup work will include phased re-vegetation (closures of unofficial trails) in some areas of the site.

Ecology is making the proposed plan available for public comment and will be accepting comments through Aug. 16.

Documents are available at ecy.wa.gov/programs/tcp/sites (search name Maury Island) and at the Vashon Library.
