Volunteers needed for new anti-hunger program

Islanders are needed for a gleaning project, gathering winter crops that would otherwise be tilled into the field, at 10 a.m. this Saturday at Northbourne Farm, just north of town.

The produce will go to the Vashon-Maury Island Community Food Bank. The event is part of a project called Harvest for Vashon, a collaboration of several organizations, including the food bank and VIGA’s Food Access Partnership.

The program’s coordinator, Sam Carp, is also looking for people interested in growing a row of food in their gardens to donate to the food bank. Educational materials and free starts are available for participants.

Those interested in gathering unwanted produce from farms and gardens for the food bank at later times this year are also needed.

For more information, or to volunteer, email harvest@vashonfoodbank.org or call the food bank at 206-463-6332.
