Dorothy Ann Morgan

Dorothy Ann Morgan passed away at Virginia Mason Hospital on July 19, 2018. Dorothy was born October 30, 1934, in Burton, Washington, daughter of Evelyn Mae Edwards Ward and Herbert Nathan Ward. At the time the barter system was used often, they paid Dr. McMurray a sewing machine for Dorothy’s delivery, when finances were better they bought it back.

Dorothy’s family homesteaded on Vashon. Her great-grandfather, Jonathon Edwards, started the Methodist Church and their homestead east of the town of Vashon was later donated by the family for the Church we have now. Dorothy attended first grade in the Old Cove School, then the school was closed and she went to Burton Grade School. When she was in the 8th grade, in 1949, there was the big earthquake which damaged the school so badly it was condemned. Dorothy graduated from Vashon High School in 1953.

During her school years Dorothy had jobs to earn money for school clothes and activities. As a child she picked berries and then went to work for the Vashon Theatre, while in high school. Dorothy was working at the theater, in 1952-53 when Jack Tabor painted the mural that is still on the interior walls.

After graduating Dorothy married Claud M. Morgan, they had two children Linda and Lawrence. After a few years Dorothy went to work for the Vashon Pharmacy where she served her fellow Islanders for more than twenty years.

Dorothy is survived by her two children, Linda Morgan Compton and Lawrence Morgan, as well as Linda’s two sons.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 15, 2018, at 3pm at the Vashon Methodist Church.
