Terri Colello

On May 4th, Terri Colello succumbed to a fast growing cancer that was discovered just before Thanksgiving, 2015. The Island has lost a treasure who touched many of our lives – as a mother, wife, sister, daughter, teacher, mentor, confidant, host, customer, and free spirit-we all know how Terri gave back as this was a major tenet of her life.

From giving Chautauqua school tours to new parents, to spearheading the McMurray Labyrinth, and giving college-bound high school students new insights about options for their future, Terri was always looking to participate. In addition to being a big part of P.I.E. and volunteering for the Sheepdog Trials, Terri was involved with Artists in the Schools from the beginning.

Food was a big part of her Island life; from preschool snacks and baseball picnics, to full blown catering and event planning, she gave her all. Many of us were involved, either as a part of the Team or simply by enjoying Terri’s hospitality and attending the event.

Terri grew up in Kirkland, graduating from Juanita High School and later from Western Washington University. She married Steve Gilmour in 1983, with her sons Nathan and Joe born while they lived in Columbia City in Seattle. After attending multiple Strawberry Festivals, the family gravitated to Vashon 23 years ago. Terri made many fast friends due to her love of the arts and facilitating funding options for students. As the Chess Queen, a baseball mom, and even a lunch lady, she was an integral piece of the Island folk.

We know Terri made a difference whenever she saw a need and will be sorely missed. Hopefully, the example she set will inspire others to give more to the world around them. Time is the biggest gift she gave because it came with love.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to all the friends and family who have supported us through this ordeal when chaos came to our house. Additionally, we would also like to express our gratitude to those who have contributed to the benevolent account set up for Terri at Chase Bank.

A celebration of Terri’s life will be held at Camp Burton on June 12th from Noon to 3 P.M. All are welcome.
