Tom graduated from Vashon High School in 1946 and from Washington State University in 1951. He received Master of Arts in Education in 1958 from the University of Washington and a Master of Arts in English in 1967 from the University of Oregon.

Fulbright teacher in Holland 1960 – 1961.

U. S. Army: Served in Korea 1951 – 1952.

English teacher: Seattle Public Schools 42 years.
