The Beachcomber makes it happen with your support | Editorial

As another year draws to a close, we at The Beachcomber would like to thank the many people who supported the newspaper in 2012. Putting out a weekly paper for a place as lively and engaged as Vashon is both difficult and rewarding, and we couldn’t have done it alone over the past 12 months.

Our readers, of course, come first. You’re a loyal audience week after week, and you often help shape the paper. A visit to the office with a news tip, a question about a topic we haven’t covered, a kind correction when we get a fact wrong, appreciation for a story well done.

We’re also deeply grateful to our advertisers, many of whom support this paper week after week, through thick and thin. Our newspaper couldn’t exist without you. Thank you for your support.

And then there are the many writers and photographers who routinely contribute to the paper — talented individuals who help us with some of the heavy lifting around here.

Several writers regularly contribute commentaries, adding personality, perspective and some humor to the opinion pages. Kevin Joyce, Will North, Kevin Pottinger and Greg (and sometimes Margaret) Wessel, thank you for keeping us laughing and pondering life on this quirky island.

A couple of arts-minded writers — Candace Brown and Shannon Flora — reviewed theater productions in the last year, finding just the right touch in covering high school and community shows.

A cadre of Islanders make our sports pages possible week in and week out. Parents and volunteers Brian Brenno, Cheryl Pruett, Rita Allman, Karen O’Neil, Marrianne Metz Lipe, Ezra Lacina, Kelly McEachern, Jeff Hoyt and Jill and Pat Mulvihill, as well as coaches Kevin Ross, Gary Means, Charley Rosenberry and Jackie Merrill, have all helped us cover our young athletes this past year.

Finally, we want to thank the many photographers who graciously shared their work with us. Ray Pfortner, Robert Teagardin, Ralph Moore, Cindy Koch, Casey Gripp, Alice Burns, Michele AnneLouise Cohen and Tom Hughes lent us a hand — or a photo — from time to time. Kelly Keenan, a hobby nature photographer, took some great photos of salmon and ocras that landed on our front page. Rik Forschmiedt made the sports pages come to life by shooting photos of young athletes in action week after week.

Another big thanks is due to Lawrence Huggins, a skilled photographer who shoots great photos for the newspaper, on assignment, simply because he enjoys the work. Larry’s photos, including one on today’s front page, have enhanced both the newspaper and Destination Vashon.

All of you, from our readers to our advertisers to those who contribute to the paper, help to keep The Beachcomber at the heart of our community. We look forward to our shared efforts and your ongoing support in 2013.
