Summer can be mischevious, dangerous time for Vashon kids

Kids are rejoicing. Parents who work outside of the home are scrambling to piece it all together. And a new energy has already, it seems, come to the Island.

Consider Monday night, when the Village Green was alive with the sounds of Greek and Balkan music. Children were frolicking. Adults circled and danced. Teens lingered long into the evening. It was one of those nights when Vashon offered up its best — music, community, a fun, playful energy.

But these luxurious days of summer are also a time when bored youth can get into trouble. Despite the best efforts of the Island’s engaged parents and youth advocates, there’s not a lot for young people to do on Vashon. Not surprisingly, the party scene at KVI Beach has already gotten under way. Mailboxes have recently gotten knocked over again. And, yes, the editor’s bike got stolen, virtually out from under her nose.

These are small matters compared to the bigger issues that face our young people if they let the boredom of summer lead to drinking and drugging. Our Island’s serpentine roads are dangerous enough; throw in the influence of alcohol, and there’s a tragedy waiting to happen.

Let’s do our best to keep our kids safe, our summer fun and the best of Vashon front and center. And a huge thank you to those who are already doing their part to enrich our Island during these long, lovely days of summer.

Next up: Molière’s “Tartuffe” in the Village Green the first weekend in July — another free performance showcasing the best Vashon has to offer.
