The Beachcomber didn’t do it alone in 2013

Putting out a newspaper in a place as lively and quirky as Vashon Island is a job that’s fun, certainly challenging and always rewarding. Here at The Beachcomber we count ourselves lucky to get to know our community so intimately and bring you the news and information you’ve come to count on each week. But we can’t take all the credit because we couldn’t do it alone. As 2013 comes to a close, we want to thank everyone who supported the newspaper this past year.

The Beachcomber gets a hand from a slate of community writers and photographers, both regular and occasional, who ask for no more than their name by their work. These volunteers are most notable in the opinion section, where guests regularly contribute commentaries, adding personality, perspective and some humor to our pages. Kevin Joyce, Will North, Kevin Pottinger, Greg Wessel and Chris Austin, some of our most regular contributors, thank you for keeping us laughing and pondering life on this eclectic island.

The sports section is also driven by volunteer writers — parents, coaches, players and other volunteers who attend local games and generously cover them for the paper. Rita Allman, Pat Call, Cheryl Cochrane, Bruce Cyra, Ezra Lacina, Karen O’Neil, Kelly McEachern, Gary Means, Cheryl Pruett and Kevin Ross have all helped us cover our athletes.

This past year regular features have been graciously contributed by a couple of island writers. Bruce Haulman continues to bring history to life with his Time & Again columns, and Jenn Reidel has helped us get to know our neighbors better with her Welcome Vashon interviews.

We also want to recognize the many photographers who occasionally share their work with us. Terry Donnelly, Jeff Dunnicliff, Mick Etchoe, Kelly Keenan, Ralph Moore, Ray Pfortner, John Sage and Robert Teagardin have all contributed photos that have added greatly to the paper. This is also sadly the last year we’ll be able to thank Rik Forschmiedt, a talented island photographer and former Beachcomber employee who contributed sports shots weekly until he moved off the island last summer.

Finally, we’re ever grateful to our readers. You’re a loyal audience week after week, and you often help shape the paper with a visit to the office with a news tip, a thoughtful letter to the editor, a question about a topic we haven’t covered, a kind correction when we get a fact wrong or appreciation for a story well done.

We’re also deeply grateful to our advertisers, many of whom support this paper week after week, through thick and thin. Our newspaper couldn’t exist without you. Thank you for your support.
